Piercing Aftercare Myths: What You Really Need to Know

Piercing Aftercare Myths: What You Really Need to Know

When it comes to healing a fresh piercing, there’s a lot of advice floating around, but not all of it is accurate. Let’s bust some common myths so you can heal like a pro.

Myth: All Piercing Bumps Are Keloids

Not quite! Most bumps that pop up near a healing piercing are irritation bumps, usually caused by pressure, friction, or minor trauma - think sleeping on your new helix or wearing snug headphones. These bumps tend to settle down once the irritation stops. Keloids, on the other hand, are a type of raised scar that extends beyond the piercing site and requires medical attention. If you’re unsure, a piercer can help point you in the right direction!

Myth: Lobes Heal in 4 - 6 Weeks

Lobe piercings have a reputation for being super quick healers, but in reality, they can take 4 - 6 months (sometimes longer) to fully heal. While they might feel fine on the outside, healing continues internally even after the initial downsize. Before swapping out your jewellery, check in with your piercer to make sure your piercing is truly ready for a change.

Myth: You Need to Twist and Turn Your Jewellery

Nope! Twisting, turning, and playing with your jewellery only causes unnecessary irritation. Your piercing is already doing the work to heal; your job is to leave it alone and let it be. The best way to keep things clean? A sterile saline solution and a gentle rinse in the shower. Harsh chemicals like alcohol, tea tree oil, and peroxide can dry out and irritate the piercing, slowing down the healing process.

The best aftercare routine is simple: clean, consistent, and hands-off. Have questions about your healing journey? Our piercers are here to guide you every step of the way!
